A study was completed to determine if stretching the hamstrings during Whole Body Vibration is more effective than static stretching alone and to monitor retention of flexibility changes.

Thirty-four recreationally active college-age subjects completed this study.  Subjects were assigned to a control group, a static stretch group, or a Whole Body Vibration and static stretch group.  Subjects stretched 5 days/wk for 4-weeks and were followed for 3-weeks after cessation to monitor retention.

Analysis showed a significant difference between treatment groups with increases in flexibility after 4-weeks of stretching.  The three week follow up showed that the Whole Body Vibration group was still more flexible than at baseline.  It was determined that stretching with vibration on a Whole Body Vibration platform appears to be a good adjunct to static stretching with the potential to enhance retention of flexibility gains.

Whole Body Vibration enhances human performance via augmented muscular strength and motor function if used prior to most any athletic performance.

Troy Flanagan, Director of Sport Science for the US Olympic Ski and Snowboard teams says that they will be using Whole Body Vibration platforms in the warm up area at the base of the race hills to warm up immediately prior to their races. Flanagan believes that this will be an important factor in their success, stating; “We find the machine incredibly useful for waking up the neurological system and applying loads through the body that we just can’t get from traditional weight training.”

Data also shows that a profound increase in the flexibility and power output of individual golfers occurs when a Whole Body Vibration warm-up bout is performed.

All in all, using Whole Body Vibration exercise machines improves overall athletic performance, endurance and recovery. This is well documented and continues to be a major topic for clinical trials. Rehabilitation and injury repair as a result of Whole Body Vibration training and therapy is also of interest to medical researchers and exercise physiologists.
