Treatment for Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis among older people. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones within the joints deteriorates and wears away over time. The smooth surface of the cartilage becomes rough, causing irritation. Eventually, if the cartilage wears down completely, you may be left with bones rubbing against each other bone, causing the ends of your bones to become damaged and your joints to become painful.
It’s not absolutely clear what causes osteoarthritis in all cases. Most researchers suspect that it’s a combination of factors, including: The aging process, joint injury, heredity, muscle weakness and obesity. Osteoarthritis can affect all joints, especially weight-bearing joints such as knees, hips, and feet which may become painful to the point of being debilitating.
Whole Body Vibration exercises are proven to help increase blood circulation, flexibility and range of motion without putting stress on these weight-bearing joints. It is a non strenuous form of exercise that has been reported to dramatically ease the pain and discomfort of both osteoarthritis and rheumatism. Regular use of Whole Body Vibration equipment improved muscle strength in elderly adults and this is extremely important to women who are particularly prone to treatment for osteoarthritis of the knees and hips.
Squats, lunges, step activities
For the individual that suffers from Osteoarthritis most traditional therapy interventions, although occasionally successful, have limitations. Among these limitations is the inability to consistently tolerate weight bearing exercises (squats, lunges, step activities etc.) which are an integral part of the recovery process and essential for restoring the support and shock absorbing capabilities of the muscles around the affected joints.
With Whole Body Vibration exercises, when first considering the squat position, which is a cornerstone exercise for lower body muscle and joint strength, the design of the Whole Body Vibration machine allows the user to apply their upper body to control the amount of weight through the lower body. This helps them, when beginning, to maintain their weight comfortably through their heels while successfully holding a slight joint angle. Successfully holding this position through a 30-60 second interval will not only “jump start” the neuromuscular system, but immediately improve blood circulation to the joint as well as local muscular activity and tone. This will allow the patient to tolerate further weight bearing exercises; exercises that may include the deep squat, lunge, bridge, or unsupported heel raise and others as the joint angle is gradually increased.
Beyond the benefits listed above, it is important to understand that, during the squat (as well as most other exercise performed on the Whole Body Vibration machine) there are other systems at work as well. Very important among these systems is the proprioceptive system (sensory receptors, found chiefly in muscles, tendons, joints, that detect the motion or position of the body or a limb by responding to stimuli arising within the organism). When motion is lost in any arthritic joint, as is the case with Osteoarthritis, the proprioceptive system struggles to maintain unimpeded communication with the brain. The resulting issues lead to stride and carriage dysfunction, poor balance responses, and insufficient muscle fiber recruitment. Through the use of vibration plate machines, an exceptionally high amount of activity is assigned to the joint proprioceptors and the system as a whole. As a result there is an over-correction of sorts and this promotes improvement treatment for Osteoarthritis the proprioceptive system’s overall efficiency.
10 minute daily session
For those who suffer from Osteoarthritis, effortlessly standing on a Whole Body Vibration machine provides you with a convenient way of increasing your circulation and stretching without overly stressing those sore joints, tendons and ligaments. After every 10 minute daily session on a Whole Body Vibration plate, treatment for Osteoarthritis you will notice improvements such as greater movement and flexibility in leg and torso muscles. Oftentimes conventional exercise can cause undue stress to joints, ligaments, and tendons, or even risk of injury, whereas a WBV exercise session actually improves and strengthens those frequently painful areas of the body with low stress movement and increased oxygenation to those sensitive tissues.
Osteoarthritis is one of the most frequent causes of physical disability among older adults. Many people with osteoarthritis find their movements or activities restricted because of stiffness, limited range of motion, and pain. Just 10 minutes a day on a WBV platform and you will look and feel younger and healthier as the increased blood flow helps to improve your range of motion, restore flexibility to stiff, sore joints, strengthen your core muscles and stimulate muscle toning and development, enabling you to live a more active life.
